As a tourist, we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Reports are it was the best weather for a start in all 42 years of the Iditarod race. From a dog team perspective, the weather was a bit tough. The dogs are used to working in colder conditions and the sleds are meant to travel on snow. But, just like historical runs, the musher and the sled dogs will deal with whatever hardship was on their trail. We stopped at a kennel sponsoring a mushing team – the dogs left behind giving us kisses and wanting to play. Alaskan huskies are definitely working dogs, and when they retire, make great pets.
